Cumberland Metropolis Council is accused of introducing an Aboriginal ‘treaty by stealth’

A western Sydney council has been accused of making an attempt to implement an Indigenous ‘treaty by stealth’.

Cumberland Metropolis Council, which covers suburbs from Lidcombe to Girraween, is  planning to signal a partnership settlement with three native Indigenous companies.

That is regardless of over two-thirds of residents voting in opposition to the Voice to Parliament referendum final October.

Mr Christou mentioned he and two colleagues objected, however the the proposal has since returned earlier than council.

‘It was proposed that we now go to a few native land councils, Gandangara Native Aboriginal Land Council, Deerubbin Native Aboriginal Land Council, and Metropolitan Native Aboriginal Land Council,’ Mr Christou mentioned.

Mr Christou mentioned the proposal would create reams of ‘crimson tape’ as it might drive council to seek the advice of Indigenous teams in a variety of decision-making, together with planning functions and road naming.
